The Regulation

The import regulation to import a used vehicle to Papua New Guinea has become more strict in recent months to ensure the vehicles that enter the country are in good overall condition and safe to drive.

Officially when you want to import a used vehicle from Japan the vehicle must meet the following criteria:

• Vehicle must be Right Hand Drive (RHD)
• Vehicle under 3,500 kg must be 5 years or newer.

Exemption on Age Limit is required.

However for some unknown reasons Road Traffic Authority (RTA) – PNG may issue an “Exemptions of Age Limit” for the vehicle you want to buy.

Here’s the process:

Your Exporter will need to make sure that the vehicle that you wish to import goes through the JEVIC inspection
A Non-Conformity Report (NCR) will need to be submitted to the RTA, together with a written request for exemption, either from you or the exporter.
It will go through a screening process and upon approval, a Permit will be processed.

With the above in order, your vehicle will be imported and registered here in Papua New Guinea.
